Blog Post #2: Iowa, The Hawkeye State



Iowa ranks 30th in population amongst the US States and has a population of about 3,123,899 people. Des Moines is by far the largest city in the state with a population of over 200,000 and also happens to be the state capital. The only other two cities in the state with a population over 100,000 is Cedar Rapids and Davenport. The population is majority white with the US Census reporting that 85% reported as White non Hispanic or Latino.

Iowa's median income level is $60,523 with a 10.2% poverty rate for the state. The largest industries for Iowans are healthcare and social services, wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, and education. The state has a majority rural makeup and has a 77% Christian makeup.

The Republican party has control over a majority of the state makeup having control over all parts of the state government except the role of attorney general which is held by the Democrats. Trump defeated Biden in the 2020 election within the state by a nearly 9 point lead. 

COVID-19 has had a heavy impact on the state with a total of 819,103 total positive tests among the state. Iowa has seen 8,829 COVID-19 deaths. The state is recovering from a recent outbreak that spiked in January and still has nearly 600 patients still in the hospital.
